What is This Alpaca Doing?
I can’t count how many times a new alpaca breeder has seen this in her field and called me hysterical. “Fluffy is down in the pasture! She’s not moving! She looks dead! What do I do?” I usually ask a few questions to help determine the cause of Fluffy’s prostrate posture. “Is it sunny?” and most importantly, “Have you walked up on her? You know, to see if she’ll get up?” The new breeder always comes back to the phone to report that once she walked up to the alpaca, the alpaca stood up. What is with this behavior? She was sunbathing. Alpacas love to do this.
Once you walk up to your alpaca, 99% of the time they will rise as Isolde is here.
…And it’s back to grazing for Isolde. New breeders – DO NOT FEEL BAD! This still happens to me several times a year. I will see one lying too still. Panic rises in my throat. “Is she okay?” I wonder. Yep, she’s just lollygagging. All part of the drama these little darlings add to our lives. Exciting, huh?

I really like this new part of your website!! Are you still going to be coming to TN? I have sent my first baby girl,Lady, now two years old, off to breed with Destiny Alpacas Phantom. This is very exciting. Cara Mia, Lady’s mom, is bred to Hidden Gem’s Romeo, who has Felix in his background, and is a very sweet rose grey boy. Today I am preparing my first fleece show entry on the last possible day. Have a wonderful day. Kathy

Hey Kathy,
Glad you like it! We will move to TN one day… I am always prepping fleeces at the last minute. Procrastination is a close friend of mine. Good luck with the breeding. Hugs!~Katy

Growing up with horses I remember that heart in the throat moment of seeing and animal down like this… but they, just like your adorable alpacas, were sunbathing!!

It just looks SO unnatural to humans. Mentioned you in my blog today. Old alpaca information is new to those of us just recently connecting to this new life-style, so thank you for the blast from the past.
