Help Us Name the New Guy
Scroll down to vote on a name for him.
Saturday morning, while I was at an alpaca show, Judy decided to have her cria. Early in the morning. When it was very cold. When our farm manager, Jeremy, arrived, he found this little guy with purple ears and his tongue lolling out of the side of his mouth. The baby was almost lifeless.
Jeremy is not the type of to allow a cria to die on his watch, so he blow dried him and got him warmed up. The baby began to show more life. As he warmed him, the cria would sometimes give in to his weakness and his head would droop. “HELL no.” Jeremy told him and brought him around again. The first day he was bottle fed goat colostrum (alpacas almost never have extra colostrum to freeze). This is him mom’s first experience with having a cria to nurse and she took some convincing. But by Sunday afternoon, the little guy was up and nursing.
Born weighing only 9 and 1/2 pounds (12 lbs. and under is considered at risk), we really didn’t expect this cria to be doing so well. Today he is at 10 and 1/2 lbs, and he’s running around, healthy as can be! The kids and I have come up with some possible names for him. Please vote and help us choose a name.
Since it was a tie, I’ve decided that Ice Cube trumps Biscuit due to the fact that this little guy was almost frozen. Biscuit fans – Do Not Despair! Biscuit will go to the top of the naming list. I promise we’ll get you a Biscuit alpaca soon!

We had a little girl alpaca last winter that was born early in the morning. When we got up and looked outside the cria was lying almost lifeless in front of her mother. The temperatures were freezing. We brought her into the shed and blew dry her with the hairdryer then wrapped her in an electric blanket to get her temperature up. She was under weight and born early. Today she is healthy and vibrant you would never know she was born under such dire circumstances.
Good luck with your new addition. I like all the names you picked up with Chase & Dash my favorite.

I was trying to vote but I think something wasn’t loading for me.
I like “Ice Cube” not only because of his white colour, but because of the frozen state he was in when you found him!
Praise God that he is now warm and safe!

My daughter (12) and I both thought Biscuit was cute. I like to play with names and consider additional siblings, Buttermilk, Butter, Margarine, Jelly, Jam, Gravy, etc. We have a new cria born 11/7 and her name is Eleanor Rigby. She joined her sister Penny Lane. We are naming our two LGD Maxwell and Lucy for “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Congratulations on your beautiful littel cria and hope health continues!

We had a 9.5 lb girl huacaya cria born this year – she took some bottle supplement feeding (cow’s milk + a little 1/2 & 1/2, + 1 T light Karo syrup). She’s doing great now and is almost normal-sized three months later!

I choose Chase. For he had a big Chase to come into his life. For he most likely had to Chase mom around to drink!

can you do something about removing the magenta spotted wallpaper – makes it incredibly difficult and frustrating to read anything on your website.
