Thanksgiving on the Farm

We had a sweet Thanksgiving this year.

This is our front yard. Note the alpaca shelter. Yes, they are even in the front yard!

I love this wreath. One of the twins tried to eat the “berries” on it when they were younger. Now the kitten jumps up and bats at the ribbons from outside. It probably won’t last much longer.

My mom and one of the twins. She’s letting the gray show in her hair this year. I like it.

My dad gets some help with the mashed potatoes from one of the twins.

She is wearing the cutest apron from Williams-Sonoma. I got it just for this occasion. My dad lives on the beach, and he ALWAYS wears Hawaiian shirts. He has one for every occasion. I wonder why he didn’t wear one with a Thanksgiving theme? Hmm. Now there’s a great gift idea! Anyone know where I can get a Hawaiian shirt with a Turkey on it?

Don’t you love when they make Indian costumes for them at school?

Her joy is infectious!

Now for the bad news. We tried a free-range turkey this year. Trying to be politically and environmentally correct, and going with the “green” movement that’s EVERYWHERE, I ordered a free-range bird with the idea that we would also try an organic bird for Christmas and determine which one we liked better.

Um, nobody liked it. At least, they didn’t like it as well as the traditional Butterball which has graced the Spears table for the past 13 years. Everyone ate it, but the “IN” bird was unanimously voted “not as good”. It lacked flavor and was tougher than our usual turkey. That probably comes from the turkeys running around, free-range, and building up muscle while their Butterball counterparts sit around (cooped up?) and get fat. I hate to say it, but the couch potato turkey tastes better to us. Original plan abandoned. We’re going back to Butterball for Christmas.

And while I’m confessing – I love veal. If ever I was on death row, I would want my last meal to be veal picatta with a side of fettucine alfredo from Chianti’s in Shreveport, Louisiana. Divine! Can I help it my taste buds aren’t PC?!! I feel guilty, I do. But I’m weak…

Dear Reader, Do you have food or a product that you love but feel a bit guilty about? Leave me a comment and tell me about it. C’mon. Tell me. please.

I don’t like live game or free range meat. I like processed sugar, meat and flours. I’m wicked. I even like McDonald’s chicken nuggets better than their chicken strips. My taste buds are so pedestrian. Don’t tell.

Butterballs are better because they are injected with butter (thus, the name). I just learned this on Thanksgiving since my stepmom makes the best Thanksgiving meal around! I asked her how her turkeys always turn out so fabulous – her response was the Butterball – this from the woman who lives in Jennie-O country! My husband said his grandmother (who raised turkeys) injected her own with butter as well. So, eat the Butterball – you are supporting turkey farms and the dairy industry! :-)

You need to try Terry’s fried turkey, (or anything else he cooks for that matter),as he is a true Cajun, born in Eunice, Louisiana. He would fry anything, and I have to admit, I’ve put on the pounds since being his Mrs.
Back to the turkey, it simply melts in your mouth and we NEVER have leftovers……….
