No Spit! – Spittin’ Saturdays
This is the last post in our Saturday Spitting series. Today I thought I would address a question that I get asked frequently. “At what age do alpacas start spitting?”
This answer is – that depends. Some alpacas are bigger spitters than others, letting it fly whenever they feel like it. While other alpacas hardly ever spit at all. Each animal has it’s own personality. Those who are more forceful and opinionated spit more frequently. The main thing is that if you do something the alpaca doesn’t like, and you keep doing it, the alpaca will probably eventually spit on you.

We took this Christmas card photo several years ago. In order to get just the right shot, my children had to hold 2-week old Bishop for longer than he would have liked. And the little guy (Bishop the alpaca) learned to spit by the end of the photo shoot. He must have thought, “How can I get them to let me go so I can run and play with my alpaca friends?” When whining and wiggling didn’t work, he started the spitting. Little puffs of air to show his irritation. It worked. We finished up the shoot sooner than if he had cooperated beautifully.
We have talked spit each Saturday in March:

Adoreable! Children and Bishop. Love the posts, very informative. I have 12 acres and have often thought I’d like a couple of Alpacas. I’ll keep reading.
