7 Reasons To Invest in Alpacas in 2009
Let’s say you love alpacas. (Who doesn’t?) You keep thinking about buying some, but you haven’t been able to pull the proverbial trigger and DO IT. Here are 7 Reasons why 2009 should be the year you take the plunge.
- It’s a Buyer’s Market. Buyers call the shots. Prices on everything are down. This includes alpacas. As a Buyer you can negotiate with Sellers and get the herd of your dreams at a super price.
- This is your opportunity to Buy Low & Sell High. Invest now. In three to five years, when you are ready to sell some breeding stock, the alpaca market will most likely favor the Sellers again. (Particularly if your investment is in high quality stock.)
- Alpacas are an investment you can insure. In these shaky times, what other investments can you find that can be insured? Alpacas are becoming more mainstream all the time, and are being touted as sound investments on MSNBC and in the Wall Street Journal.
- Due to compounding, your investment in alpacas grows regardless of the state of the economy. As long as your breeding stock is reproducing, your investment is growing. This year, investments that are guaranteed to grow are few and far between.
- Tax Advantages. If you qualify, you can take a Section 179 deduction up to $250K through December 31, 2009. After that, the limit is expected to go back down.
- Why wait? Many people wait around for the “perfect time” to make a big change in their lives. Hint: There is no perfect time.
- When money becomes an issue, as it is for most people around the world today, it reminds us what is important. At the end of the day, do you love what you do? Do your investments make you happy? Does your job or work make you happy? If farming is your dream, now is a great time to make your dream come true. Do Your Dream!

Thanks for the comment on my blog… my first visit to yours. Gosh, I did not realize there were Alpaca farms in Alabama. Kudos to you for raising them and your children!

So true! We’re certainly going to give it a go this year. We won’t have land of our own so we’ll invest on an agistment basis at first. We don’t have loads of cash but I’d far rather get a few alpacas now than have no alpacas and a few extra numbers on a bank statement.
I’d love to see some numbers around the selling price of alpacas over the years. Would it be right to assume as they become more popular (and thus numerous) that prices will decline?

[...] We all know the financial world is a mess at the moment. Who wants to invest in the banks after the mess that they caused? Certainly not us. But alpacas can turn out to be a fantastic investment in the current climate, as alpaca farm girl points out. [...]

What is it with all the “I Love Alpaca” commercials and get into Alpaca farming?
Is there a HUGE demand for Alpaca fur?
I don’t hear people saying, “Oh did you hear about Jean and George, they have an Alpaca farm and are really making a LOT of money and couldn’t be happier.”

I have recently bought 2 1/2 acres and want to start a hobby farm. I am drawn to raising alpacas as they are such a beautiful animal.
I am amazed at how much they cost though. I thought I may be able to start out small and grow the herd bigger over the next 10 years. Looking into alpacas, I fear now I will need to take a bank loan to start this dream.
Frustrated and trying to figure out how I can make this dream a reality.

I couldn’t agree more that now is a great time to buy alpacas. Prices are as low as they are likely to get for the foreseeable future and now that people are starting to feel better about the economy (Dow back to 10,000 this week) they will be looking to invest again.
With the pain inflicted by the stock market in the last two years more people will be looking for an alternative to traditional stocks.
And the long term future for alpacas is sound – baby boomers are starting to retire now and many of them are looking for something that will allow them to live in a rural community, away from the urban centers where they made their careers, and earn a good living at the same time. Alpacas are the perfect answer for them.
