I couldn't agree more that now is a great time to buy alpacas. Prices are as low as they are likely to get for the foreseeable future and now that people are starting to feel better about the economy (Dow back to 10,000 this week) they will be looking to invest again.
With the pain inflicted by the stock market in the last two years more people will be looking for an alternative to traditional stocks.
And the long term future for alpacas is sound - baby boomers are starting to retire now and many of them are looking for something that will allow them to live in a rural community, away from the urban centers where they made their careers, and earn a good living at the same time. Alpacas are the perfect answer for them.

I have recently bought 2 1/2 acres and want to start a hobby farm. I am drawn to raising alpacas as they are such a beautiful animal.

I am amazed at how much they cost though. I thought I may be able to start out small and grow the herd bigger over the next 10 years. Looking into alpacas, I fear now I will need to take a bank loan to start this dream.

Frustrated and trying to figure out how I can make this dream a reality.

What is it with all the "I Love Alpaca" commercials and get into Alpaca farming?
Is there a HUGE demand for Alpaca fur?
I don't hear people saying, "Oh did you hear about Jean and George, they have an Alpaca farm and are really making a LOT of money and couldn't be happier."

What do i need to know about starting a alpaca farm ??
We have 30 acres so they would have plenty of room. and theres already a barn set up for them. So what do i really need to know about them ??

So true! We're certainly going to give it a go this year. We won't have land of our own so we'll invest on an agistment basis at first. We don't have loads of cash but I'd far rather get a few alpacas now than have no alpacas and a few extra numbers on a bank statement.

I'd love to see some numbers around the selling price of alpacas over the years. Would it be right to assume as they become more popular (and thus numerous) that prices will decline?
