Beyond updating on the Fiberart for a Cause fundraiser that ended this week, my post was a bit of a stretch though I do tell you how you can get stamp patterns from things you dont' want to get paint or ink on like vintage lace and doilies.

<abbr><em>Carolyn B (vintagepix)s last blog post..<a href="http://vintagepix42.blogspot.com/2009/05/fiber-arts-fridays-bits-pieces.html" rel="nofollow">Fiber Arts Fridays - bits & pieces</a></em></abbr>

Unfortunately my post wasn't related to knitting or crochet this week. I do have fond memories of my mom's fingers moving at lightning speed as she would crochet granny square after granny square for afghans and other projects. My grandmother is the knitter of the family and has recently been teaching me little bits when I get back home for visits.

My grandmother on my Dad's side was a quilter. My grandmother on my Mom's side was a cross stitcher. My Mom did crewel and cross stitch. I started doing crewel and cross stitch in junior high school. I loved sewing class in Jr. High, too. I used to sew for myself in high school and for my kids when they were little. I learned to crochet in high school - my Mom's hairdresser taught me. I have always done something with my hands. Needlepoint, knitting, crocheting, felting, needlefelting. There just isn't enough time in the day to get it all done. Soon, I will be tackling weaving. It's all so much fun.

My grown daughter is coming to see me for Mother's Day and she has just purchased knitting needles. I am so excited to help her get started. Whoo hoo!

while I don't crochet or knit, I am thankful to my Grammie to have taught me how to create, and now I design patterns for dolls, punchneedle, stitcheries and more.

I am so new to this all and just trying to get a hang of things. My husband's grandmother, who I adore, did much crocheting. I don't believe either of my grandmothers did.

The post I linked to for today is how I learned to crochet from my Gran. Everyone in my family did some kind of hand work, even my Mom-Mom did amazing embroideries before she lost her eyesight to diabetes. I remember going to LeeWards with my mom to get beaded keychain craft kits, and we were always doing some kind of work, though yarn was what we returned to over and over. I think the ease of buying yarn, even available at Kresge or KMart in those days, just made it something that we loved. My Gran made tons of rugs, I still have the rainbow rug she made for me at the entrance of my studio. Say what you will about acrylic, sometimes it is a very good thing :)

i love it that your daughter wants to learn to knit. i'm sure she can get started at 6. my 3yo is learning to treadle and has mastered threading the leader yarn through the orifice. :)

my grandmother always sewed and quilted, but i only found out after i got my spinning wheel that the work she did at the johnson & johnson mill was spinning the material that would become the pads for bandaids. wish i could ask her about that now...

Though my mother did a little sewing and knitting, it was my grandmothers who taught me to crochet and sew, and who inspired my creativity. I am truly grateful for having learned from them.

And it is truly inspiring to see the resurgence of knitting, and other fibre-related crafts.
