Have to sign off, computer shorting due to me drooling on keyboard after looking at this batt. Tweeted as asked and provided a direct link to this site as well as bunnysmackdown info. I want to win. I also want to know which kind of alpaca is in the batt. What a yummy yarn this is!

In response to Kathleen, and other hopeful winners, a little about the fiber used in this batt:
I’ve used huacaya fiber
The alpaca fiber is really special, it is from a blanket that was given to me by Tripp Forstner from Magical Farms when I visited him in July. It was so fine, white, bright, luminous, shiny… and the crimp was simply astounding, you have NEVER seen anything like this. I’ve spun some of it undyed into a sport weight yarn and it was as soft as angora, it even had a halo, just gorgeous. However, it does fall a little flat, even with all that crimp, and reminds me of spinning newborn cria fiber, so I did blend in a little regular alpaca (from my own herd) so that the spun yarn will have a little squishy-ness.
The angora fiber is from my own Nero, a black boy that I bred from two of my own rabbits – he always produces an amazing amount of fiber at shedding time (3oz this time, for a satin angora that is fantastic), he’s got amazing luster, depth of colour and fineness.
These batts contain my best of the best and are going to produce some REALLY pretty yarn for you!
Good luck!

I wonder if anyone here has tried spinning suri. I love the idea of blending such gorgeous fibers together.
August 3rd, 2009 at 10:47 pm
My kids had rabbits when they were growing up and I would love to have a heard of alpacha now…I bet the bat would make for some awesome knitting;)
August 3rd, 2009 at 11:05 pm
@Kathleen: I’ve spun suri and huacaya and both blended together. All options are heavenly!
I think I love spinning alpaca (either! both!) more than anything else (although to be fair I’ve not been able to give angora a fair shot!) Someday I’d love to have a wee farm which will include angoras AND alpacas just for me to spin and cuddle (well, I don’t think alpacas really like *cuddling*, but you know…) and love.
Heh.

I have two huacaya females. Last December, I was a knitter and new spinner who loved alpaca yarn, and heard about an open farm day at an alpaca farm near my home. The instant I saw an alpaca in person I was hooked. I had to find a way to have these animals in my life. In January I got my two girls, seen and posted about frequently on my blog: http://www.charteroakalpacas.blogspot.com, I’ve set up an esty shop where I sell hand spun yarns from my girls’ fiber and the my happiest moments are spent spinning their fiber, or sitting with them in the pasture at the farm where I board them. It’s my new goal to have my own alpaca farm someday, and to have a brick and mortar store where alpaca yarn and fiber is promoted and sold. Alpacas really are amazing, mystical creatures.

I LOVE Angora’s! I worked at a fiber studio for a number of years and we had a studio bunny named Dennis. He was a wicked heathen, and SO lovable at the same time. He was particularly humble after all his fur had been plucked out… hehehe. I can’t wait to have my own angora’s someday….

I haven’t spun with angora before. I will have to email a friend and see if her daughter will let me have a tiny bit of her bunny’s fur to try it.
I love spinning with alpaca though.

I helped shear alpacas a year or two ago, and I’ve got a fleece in my possession, but I’ve yet to spin either alpaca or angora. I acquired the fleece before I had my spinning wheel …

I love both bunnies & alpaca! I recently spun pure alpaca for the first time. Not the easiest thing, but very soft. DH & I talk about raising alpaca when/if we ever retire! I’d love to win that batt!

Oh heavens! Those are some beautiful batts! I love animals but as I live in the suburbs (due to dh’s job) I can’t have anything considered “livestock”. I love spinning with alpaca, but I’ve never tried angora. It looks very soft.

Hi there — heard about this contest on a friend’s blog. I got my wheel a few months ago, but still haven’t spun any batts — would love the chance to give it a try! A few months ago, I saw an alpaca on craigslist, and I was tempted to go say hello. I love the feel of angora, but I prefer just a hint of it in blends to the angora sweater I remember having in high school…so I guess in this particular smackdown, I vote alpaca.

I fell in love with angora bunnies the minute I saw them! Alpacas I have always loved, there’s a special place in my heart for long lanky animals. I too have never spun any batts, in fact I’ve never spun anything I didn’t clean and comb myself! So it would be a nice treat and first foray into such magical yarns
